Go to File — Options — General. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. When I download a document from an email, it always opens in the “protected view” mode. If there are text boxes, pictures or graphics in the documents, they are not the way they really appear in the document. I have to change to the “enable editing” mode to see the true document. It would be very helpful if I could just eliminate the protected mode step and go right to the enable editing mode as most of the documents I open are attached to emails.

In reply to Jay Freedman’s post on May 14, I am less worried about documents that I created containing a virus or destructive macro, since I created the document although I AM a programmer and I could’ve been having “one of those days” , but what an annoying pain to have to click “edit” every time.
I’m usually not opening a document to read it. I’m opening it to edit it usually. So thank you for helping me find the setting that prevents me having to click edit every single time. There seem to be at least two things discussed in this thread: Read Mode Full Screen Reading in some versions of Word and Protected view.
To prevent documents from opening in Read Mode, clear the option to “Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view” at File tab Options General.
However, to completely get rid of Protected view, you must also change the File Block settings. Of course, it should be noted as Jay already did that changing these options decreases security and may expose your computer to viruses.
